About

Hi! I am Derek. I’m a half-consultant, half-blogger, living somewhere in Metro Manila. I have super powers. No, I’m just kidding. I have been a self-confessed geek/nerd for quite sometime now, though I am really not sure what the difference between a geek and a nerd is.

I am one of the translators in Global Voices Online on Filipino.

The Site
This is my personal blog. It’s a work in progress, and the only time it would be completed is when I am dead. Most of my posts here are in Filipino, so as long as you’re knowledgeable with the language, you are most certainly welcome here.

The Name
Apendiks is a Tagalized form of the word appendix. My mother would always tell me not to run or lift heavy objects after meals, because that would make me prone to appendicitis, a condition characterized by inflammation of the appendix. Years later this “theory” of her is now backed with some “statistics”. According to her the risk of men having appendicitis is higher than that of women, so I listened to her advice. I have a classmate from elementary who got appendicitis and was absent from our class for almost 2-3 months. She’s a girl, by the way.

I just learned from Wikipedia that even though appendix may tend to cause death by infection, it is traditionally thought to have no specific function in the human body, specifically to its digestive system. There have been no reports of impaired immune or gastrointestinal function in people without an appendix. (Don’t get intimidated by my terminologies. They are just copied from Wikipedia. hehe..)

My blog has no clear purpose, really. Hence the reason why I called it Apendiks. This blog has no specific function in the Internet. :P
